Joep de Bruijne voltooide in 2012 zijn proefschrift, getiteld ‘Direct-acting antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis C’. Sinds 2017 is hij werkzaam als MDL-arts in Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht waarbij zijn onderzoek zich focust op virale hepatitis en behandeling van hepatocellulair carcinoom.
