Joop Arends voltooide in 2010 zijn proefschrift, getiteld “Immunological and virological changes during treatment for hepatitis C infections”. Zijn onderzoek focust zich momenteel op de klinische aspecten van hepatitis B en C (co)-infecties, en de effecten van HIV-geïnduceerde immunologische activatie in relatie tot de ontwikkeling van comorbiditeiten. Daarnaast is hij mede-oprichter van de Nederlandse HepNED consortium en is hij voormalig voorzitter van de European Study Group of Viral Hepatitis (ESGVH).
